THINGS TO DO WHILE HERE IN KOHALA
ATV Outfitters Tours: http://www.atvoutfittershawaii.com
This is not only a fun way to see Kohala, but to learn the fascinating history
of this area from some of its descendants. This history is rich in lore,
and only imparted orally, as tradition dictates.
Hawi Farmer’s Market – Sundays
under the banyan tree in the center of town – anything from Thai
food to locally grown produce – handcrafts
to flea market-type items.
Organic produce from Sage Farms under the banyan
tree Tuesdays and Fridays from 4-6 p.m.
Rent a kayak
in Kawaihae – 15 minutes from Hawi – and dine at
the delicious Café Pesto or the Harbor Grill while there!
Nighttime
snorkeling off Mauna Kea resort where you can swim with giant manta
rays during low surf conditions.
Visit the
birthplace of Kamehameha the Great – you should have 4 wheel
drive or walk along the ocean’s edge into the site – and
visit the heiau while you’re there.
Hike down into Pololu
Valley and experience the majesty of the north shore with her
black sand beach and bamboo forests.
Honoka’a People’s
Theatre is worth mention, though a hour’s
drive from here. This lovely facility has been completely
restored (Chris says “with a kind of neo-classical
style”) – it
has a new sound system, and contemporary films are tastefully
chosen. Concerts
are
also featured at this venue.
These are some of our favorite
things to do. Many others can be discovered in the guide
books listed below.
